“I would never want us to luxuriate in a sound that is only beautiful. But a sound that is broad. Soothing, graceful or bold and fierce, it reveals a boundless energy, sourced from aspects that often shape our existence. A sound that urges one to apprehend the complexity and contradiction that resides in human existence, and grows thicker than the layers of our skin.” It displays colorful vocal lines, harmonic tensions, power dynamics, unexpected twists, a distinctive, hybrid sound finding theatrical nuances. The music carries a sense of pondering, with a touch of sadness, warmth and loose intimacy, as well as accumulated tension released and resolved in the midst of improvisation. Anita has a taste for extensive melodies, traveling fast from high to low registers.
Anita drew inspiration from her heroes’ work and artistry, amongst whom Esperanza Spalding, Cecile Mcclorrin Salvant, Jen Shyu, Sofia Jernberg. Intuitively anticipating each player’s strength and noteworthy instances, Anita imagined the composed material and entrusted her musical partners with enough room for adventure. Compositions reflect a vast array of artistic influences amongst which works from French realist poet Louis d’Aragon (“J’arrive ou je suis etranger”) Spalding’s album “Songwrights Apothecary Lab, or S. Prokofiev’s Violin Concerto No.1 & 2.
All Layers Beneath the Surface is Anita’s debut album, which came to existence from the moment she began forging her own artistic path abroad. As a young driven, female artist, whose journey has been shaped by loss, grief, expectation, pressure, and the loneliness that often accompanies the pursuit of one’s dreams, Anita uses this music to find her voice in the world. It represents a deeply emotional process of transformation – learning to be vulnerable, embracing authenticity, and encouraging connection across (perceived) boundaries. “These new songs gave me a way to turn my feelings into something others can relate to, offering both them and myself a road forward where it must be love, and hope and the chance to encounter the healing force of music.”
The album is a deeply personal and artistically innovative exploration – music for the self-reflective listener who seeks to uncover their stories and turn them into messages of their own. It is an attempt to stay authentic, trusting intuitive guidance, and digging deep beneath the surface.
